Breastfeeding is a beautiful journey, but it can sometimes come with discomfort—especially sore nipples. Whether you're a new parent navigating the early days of nursing or a seasoned pro dealing with occasional irritation, this simple saltwater soak can provide soothing relief.
What You’ll Need
1 cup warm water
½ teaspoon of table salt
A shot glass
A clean towel
How to Use the Saltwater Soak
Prepare the Solution
Mix 1 cup of warm water with ½ teaspoon of table salt.
Stir until the salt is completely dissolved.
Pour the solution into a shot glass, filling it about halfway.
Soak Your Nipple
Lean your breast over the shot glass and gradually sit back to allow the nipple to fully submerge in the solution.
It might be helpful to have a towel nearby to catch any spills.
Let the solution sit on your nipple for about five minutes to maximize healing benefits.
Dry and Protect
After soaking, gently pat dry with a clean towel.
To avoid contamination, make a fresh solution each time you do the soak.
Alternative Application
If soaking feels too messy or inconvenient, you can use a clean cotton ball to apply the saltwater solution directly to the nipple. However, allowing the nipple to fully submerge tends to provide extra healing benefits.
Best Practice After Nursing
If you’re applying this treatment after a feeding session:
Express a few drops of breast milk and let them air dry on the nipple—this adds natural antibacterial and healing properties.
Follow with the saltwater rinse or soak, then air dry again.
Apply nipple cream if you wish, but it's not mandatory!
Why This Works
Saltwater has natural healing and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great gentle remedy for cracked or sore nipples. Pairing it with breast milk’s antibacterial benefits can help soothe discomfort and promote faster healing.
Give this simple routine a try and see if it brings you some much-needed relief! 💛
